Are successful bettor ordinary people or extraordinary people? Are they like the general public, thinking and acting like them? I do not think so. If you are relatively new and venturing into sports betting, you might have come across many people agreeing together that this or that team is going to win the game while doing your research. But, what does that all mean to you?
Consensus is the general public's opinion of who may win the game and if there are more than 70% of the people supporting one of the sides, usually they end up being the unhappy bettors. The hindsight that many failed to realize is that if the sports bookmakers always fail against public opinion, they would have close down ages ago.
Therefore, always be cautious when you are planning to wager on the popular team. Usually the odd is low and there is a high chance of losing it big as many would think that it is a sure-win bet by placing more money on the game. This is especially true when you see the bookies happily accepting the bets when majority of the people are supporting one team.
Although betting based mainly on public consensus is unwise, however it does not mean that you must bet against the more popular team in every game. There are some cases where you must also consider consensus and compare it to the line movement. When you see that they have something in common then that will be the time to strike.
