Best Sports Games Ever

For those that remember playing on the Atari 2600 or Commodore 64, it blows the mind to think just how far the gaming industry has come in such a short time. Today, games achieve once undreamed of levels of realism, and perhaps this is most readily apparent in the segment of the market catering to the sports fan. However, realism isn't always the hallmark of a great sports video game, as you'll see as you take a journey through our picks for the top 8 best sports games ever.

8. Madden 2005

In terms of financial success, the Madden franchise is the greatest sports video game series ever made, but we had a tough time placing it any higher since it has limited appeal outside of North America. Why did we choose the 2005 edition out of the many available? Because 2005 included all of the great innovations we now take for granted.

7. NBA Street Vol. 2

Many people would argue that NBA Jam should be here instead, but those would just be the old farts that can't let go of the past. Street took NBA Jam and made it cool for a whole new generation.

6. Tiger Woods PGA Tour 2003

Just as Tiger Woods helped to give the sport broader appeal, the 2003 edition of PGA Tour made golf video games available to entire new segments of the gaming field. People who wouldn't be caught dead on the links were trashing talking and teeing off with Tiger.

5. World Soccer Winning Eleven 7 International

There are many great football titles to choose from, and reducing them to a single best is no easy task. In the end, we chose this one because it was revolutionary at the time of its release. Many football fans think FIFA, but EA owes a great deal of gratitude to this Konami product.

4. MLB 09: The Show

Unlike the Madden series, games geared around America's other pastime sell extremely well outside of North America. MLB 09: The Show stands apart because it is still the standard for realism in a baseball game, and realism is king in baseball video games.

3. NHL '94

You knew that there had to be a hockey game in the list somewhere, but did you expect it to be a mid-90s entry? Maybe not, but when it comes to hockey video games, we think fun trumps graphics. This is the most enjoyable hockey game ever assembled.

2. Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2

There was a time when many of us wouldn't even consider skateboarding a sport, but that has all changed. THPS2 is not only the greatest skateboarding game ever made, it revolutionized sports games in general with its fluid animation.

1. Punch-Out!!

When one sits down to create a list of the greatest sports video games ever made, one might as well start by pencilling in Punch-Out in the number one slot. No video game has ever captured the worldwide imagination quite the way this one did.

Well, there you have them, the top 8 best games ever according to us. We're sure you disagree with at least a few. Where would the fun be if you didn't?

Fight Night Round 4 and FIFA 09 Sports Games - Winning Secrets

FIFA Soccer 09

Who doesn't love FIFA 09, with all the tricks and techniques? There's nothing better than showing up your rivals with a few fake-outs. But we're all about winning here, and in order to do that, you need to score more goals. And the best way to score those points is to learn how to make your kicks count. Here are a few techniques that should do the trick.

First, there's the hard low shot, a great move to make when you're farther back on the playing field. To pull this one off, do a quick double tap - or even triple tap - on the shoot button. Whatever you do, don't hold the button down too long. Remember, it's all about the quick tap (by quick tap, I'm referring only to FIFA 09 - if you're doing the "quick tap" elsewhere, that's your business...).

Also good to know is the chip shot. Do this with a combo of the LB and shoot button; the ball goes right over the goalie. Just don't hit this one too hard, or it goes flying over the net.

And then there's the ever-lovin' finesse shot, a favorite of the FIFA player. This one can be executed simply by pressing the RB (or R1, depending on your system). Do this one when you've got a moment to stop and try for a well-aimed shot; the finesse shot is recommended for when you're closer to the goal, as opposed to the hard low shot.

These tips are easy to learn, and after getting the hang of it, you'll be cleaning out your rivals' accounts every time.

Fight Night Round Four

In all the annals of sports games, the boxing game has always been a particular favorite. Sure, there's a tremendous satisfaction in beating your opponent at Football, Soccer, or Basketball. But there's something downright therapeutic about literally getting to kick the crap out of your best buds. And so it is with EA's Fight Night Round Four, where you get to play as some of the greatest men that ever took up the sweet science. But in order to float like a butterfly, sting like a bee, and make your rival holler "Uncle!" (or some other expletive that we're probably not allowed to print here), follow these tips.

First and Foreman... er, foremost, it's all about the counter-punch. Land one of these in, and the effect is far more potent than your typical uppercut, hook, or straight. There are three basic ways to get the counter-punch. First, the well-timed block; put up your guard right as your opponent's punch lands. Second is the lean; right as your rival is about to get one in, lean back left or right. Then, go to town. Third, bob; use semi-circle movements with the left stick to bob out of the way. Word of caution, though - act fast! You don't have a hell of a lot of time to make the counter-punch, so be sure to get in there quickly. Also remember that your opponent can land in a solid counter-punch after they've blocked, ducked or weaved. So try to keep your distance whenever possible.

It's also important to keep your opponent off-balance (literally and figuratively) with a series of jabs. The jab is the fastest one in the entire game, so your best bet is to land one in when your opponent is swinging an uppercut or a hook at you.

And when all else fails, do what comes naturally: fight dirty. Your opponent has you on the ropes? Nothing a well-placed head butt or body blow can't fix. Just be careful with this one: you could get docked a point, or be disqualified.

So just follow these tips, and you'll have your opponents eating canvas (served up with a side of crow). Like we said, there's just nothing quite like settling the score with fisticuffs.

Types of Free Online Sports Games for Adults

If you're into playing games online and love sports then you'll not come up short when trying to find something to play. Whether you enjoy playing 3D games or predicting the outcome of real-life events, the Internet is a great place to join in.

The obvious place to start when talking about free online sports games for adults are the interactive single player titles. These tend to be reasonably simply flash games (not exactly comparable to your average console title) which involve you participating in a virtual sporting event. These cover a wide array of sports and can be found on an equally varied number of sites.

Many of these interactive games are simply standalone with personal high scores kept and occasionally league tables to see how you fair against others. They are great for wasting a little time, but not necessarily for winning prizes or getting your competitive juices really flowing.

So as an alternative, why not try a sports prediction game? The concept is simple enough, you guess the outcome of real-life sporting events and, if you're correct, you'll receive points. The more points that you are able to accumulate (i.e. the more results you get right), the better your chances of coming away victorious.

This is very much an up and coming area for free online sports games. It hasn't necessarily had a massive breakthrough, but there are still millions of people across the world who get involved with the weekly and monthly competitions they offer. Not only do you have the chance to win cash prizes though, but you can also become an active member within the community.

This is something that many other formats lose. When you're playing on most sports prediction games you'll have the opportunity to share your opinion, taunt opponents and gloat about your prowess through the forums provided. It's a great way to make a such a simple and common practice all the more enjoyable and rewarding. So rather than just having a chat with friends about the weekend's sporting events, you can release your predictions for the world to see and critique.

The final free online sports game that we're going to talk about here is the fantasy game. So rather than playing an interactive flash game or predicting the outcome of a game, you can actually build and manage your own team.

These fantasy leagues now cover a huge variety of sports across the world. You can get involved with managing a football team, motorsport, rugby, cricket, in fact pretty much anything that you can think of. Like the prediction game you'll have the opportunity to interact with other players and even win major prizes if you come top of the league at the end of the month or season.

So as you can tell, there is no shortage of free online games for the avid sports games. Some are virtual, others based in the real world of sport but all are highly competitive, a great deal of fun and pretty addictive too.

The 1936 Olympic Games in Berlin

In 1931, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) had granted the Olympic Games to Berlin, Germany without knowing that Adolf Hitler was to obtain authority in the country two years after. Not later than 1936, the Nazis were already in command of Germany and started to execute their racist schemes. There was a worldwide dispute if the 1936 Olympic Games in Nazi Germany must be boycotted. The US was on the brink of passing up, although in the final minute, they chose to take the invitation.

The Nazis took advantage of the occasion and made it a means to advocate their philosophy. They constructed four extravagant arenas, a polo sports ground, an open-air theatre, swimming pools and an Olympic Village which had 150 small houses for the male participants. The German people would have been prouder to display a German Flag during the 1936 Berlin Olympics, but instead Nazi banners were all over the place during the Games. A well-known Nazi propaganda filmmaker recorded the Olympic Games and created a movie from it entitled Olympia.

The 1936 Berlin Olympics were the first Games broadcasted on TV and were the original to employ telex transmissions of the outcome. The torch relay made its first appearance as well at these Games.

The prominent athlete of the 1936 Olympics was Jesse Owens who was a black competitor from the US. Owens, dubbed as the "Tan Cyclone" took home four gold medals for the long jump, the 200-meter sprint around a turn, the 100-meter dash and for being a part of the 400-meter relay team.
